Author: James Herbert
Format of Book: CD

The Review:
This book was stupid in parts, frightening, sad and much much more. Although this book would not have been a book I would have chosen I cant say how much I enjoyed it. It had a brilliant story line. A little far fetched at times. It had twists in it right to the very end. It was one of those books that you could just not put down. It had me on the edge of my chair, really gripping.Another feature about this book, it had a beginning, a middle and an end.

The Review:
I am not sure if this series of books is aimed at young or older readers, I am 54 and have read 4 books in the series. I found them refreshing, interesting characters each having by the authors writing a most definite life of their own,and in this series I found humour, comradeship excellent story lines, usually more than one story taking place, and if I had to give it a mark sort of out of 10 then for sheer escapisim I would give it 10 out of 10.

Title of Book: Johnny Angel
Author: Danielle Steel
Format of Book: CD
Bought or borrowed? & if so where from: Borrowed from RNIB
The Review:
I am a great fan of Daniel Steel, however this book was more like a Mills and Boon. Just like a Mills and Boon, you knew exactly where the story line was going. In some respects it reminded me of a childs fairy story. The story was just stupid.
Four out of ten and that's being generous.

Title of Book: A Perfect Nightmare
Author: John Saul
Format of Book: tape
Bought or borrowed? & If so where from: Borrowed, NLS
The Review:
A perfect nightmare is a story about real estate agents who are selling houses and a mad man who goes to the walk through when the houses are being looked over by potential buyers. If there is a house where a teenager is living he makes plans and eventually kidnaps the young girl and takes her to a place where life isn't pleasant.
I give this book a 10. I found the story easy to follow and very gripping and suspenseful.

Title of Book: Billy Straight

The Review:
This is the story of Billy, on the run from his mothers abusive partner. Then he is witness to a murder and life gets even more complex and frightening. I found this to be an excellent read with Billy narrating his own part of the story. I was on the run with him, every step of the way. I'd give it a nine out of ten.

Title of Book: The Secret Life of Bees
Author: Sue Monk Kidd
Format of Book: Four track cassette from U. S. national library service; or MP3 files downloadable from Audible
Bought or borrowed? & If so where from: Borrowed from NLS, bought from Audible
The Review:
This in my opinion is excellent women's fiction. This is a coming of age story of a teenage white girl, set in the south in the early 60s, played out against a background of the civil rights struggle. Three black sisters take in a young white girl and her black nanny, as she struggles to come to terms with her father's abuse, and her guilt over her blame for the murder of her mother. The author communicates her philosophy of life through the metaphor of the life cycle of bees; the sisters are engaged in bee keeping. The sisters also practice worship of a statue of the Virgin Mary which helps the heroine to learn to connect with her own maternal feelings. The female reader from Audible does a beautiful job of portraying the characters voices through their black or white southern accents.

Ten out of ten. Wonderful book read very well, readers name, Caroline Bonnimen. Book starts off in a fishing village. We get an insight of the lives of the fishing people in the village. There is also of course a laird, with a beautiful refined wife. The book explains all about the fishing boats going out for weeks at a time. How all the villagers pull together Then we hear how a lot of the fishermen are called up to go to war. We are told a lot about what happens to one of the fishermen's daughters. Just when you think nothing else could happen, some thing does. Surprises , shocks and so much more. As usual this book has a beginning, middle and a good ending. This book had me on the edge of my seat more than once. My over all view of this book is brilliant.

The book is set in victorian Edinburgh. Focusing on love, rejection and eventual reconciliation and happiness of a couple of the upper class in high society. Including a woman who helps a very poor family, who are housed in slum like accommodation in the back street poor quarter of Edinburgh.
It poigniently portrays the class differences starkly evident in victorian Edinburgh society, with the harsh and desperateday to day struggles that the poor have to contend with in their lives.

Dirk Pitt was astonished to discover that he had two grown children he had never known, 23-year-old twins born to a woman he thought had died in an underwater earthquake. Both have inherited his love of the sea, and now they are about to help their father in the adventure of a lifetime. The two young people are working in a NUMA underwater enclosure off the shore of Nicaragua, trying to determine its origin. Then the worst storm in years boils up out of the sky, heading not only straight for them but also, for a luxurious floating resort hotel. Desperately they, and the NUMA crew, rush to the rescue of the hotel's inhabitants, but what they find in the storm's wake makes the furies of nature pale in comparison.

Back after an involuntary leave of absence, LAPD homicide detective Harry Bosch lands himself his first case: a Hollywood producer called Tony Aliso found in the boot of a Rolls Royce, bound and shot twice in the head. At first it looks as though the Mafia put an end to Tony's tawdry career. But the IRS were on to him, so maybe the mob were covering their tracks? Harry soon finds that nothing is that simple - the supposed mob hitman is in fact an undercover FBI agent. Then, suddenly, he's yanked off the case. But only a bullet can stop Harry when he's searching for the truth.
