TAFN Golf League Summer 2008

End of League Report

The first TAFN golf league is now complete and I thought you might like to know how it all went. There were 20 members of the league and over a period of some 21 weeks they all played against each other. Some 189 games have been played amounting to a total of over 21,000 shots.

From my point of view I can say that I have been delighted with the way the league has played out and how every member has entered into the spirit of it and a sense of fun and camaraderie has prevailed throughout. We have seen some excellent golf with more than a few very close games and some great surprise results along the way. Aside from the actual golf it has been fantastic to witness the banter and playful sledging that has gone on during the previous months and the fact that lots of people are excited about future leagues is a testament, I think, to how well this one has gone.

Congratulations go to Ian M otherwise known as Maverick who finished the league at the top of the table and now has won the honour of naming one of the golf rooms on the communicator. It was extremely close at the end of the day with Robert G A K A The Golden Eagle being just a single point behind Ian, an unfortunate 18th hole in his game against Maria C A K A Mustang Sally resulting in a draw which meant Ian had a clear run at the title. In Third place was Grasshopper, more commonly known as Joey R who despite being a couple of points of the top finished the league with the best overall shot count after some truly spectacular rounds of golf.

As well as the accolade for the winners the players of the league were asked to vote for a member who they felt deserved a mention for whatever reason. The criteria for this Player's Choice award was left open and people were nominated on the basis of how much they have improved over the league, or how entertaining they had been, or if it was thought that someone had suffered particularly bad luck during the competition. Michael B or the Dewsbury Dynamo as he was known received a number of votes due to his excellent sportsmanship and perseverance despite winning very few games. After a close look at his stats it was discovered that he was the most consistently improving player of the league with nearly every game passing he improved his average result which is a massive credit to him. Michelle C A K A Moonflower also received a number of votes on the basis of her excellent adoption of the game after such a short time. It has also been noted by a number of people that the golf league has really brought Michelle out of her shell making her much more confident on the communicator. One final credit to her is that it was Jim G who taught her to play the game and convinced her to join the league and therefore it was beautifully ironic that they played the very last game of the whole league during which Michelle gave Jim a thorough trouncing! smiles. But the winner of the title of Player's Choice Player of the League goes to Trevor F A K A the Hitman who has provided so much fun and witty banter throughout the whole league despite some bad luck and a few technical problems as well. Trevor attributes his great success during the league, he finished 17th out of 20, to his lucky pickled walnuts.

Jim G or the croc as he is known has the accolade of going into the water the most times on a single hole, which was a staggering three times whilst Karen M certainly lived up to her nickname of Soggy Moggy and on the overall spent more time in the water than on the fairways. The Bondai Babe or Catherine M as she is known as in real life wins the doughnut of the league award by managing to start her game against Trevor and play three holes before it was realised that she was playing on the wrong course.

All joking aside it has been a most fantastic summer of golf and I think that the presence of the golf both socially and in the form of the league has certainly done its part in keeping TAFN a great place to be in these last few months. Some good friendships have been made and existing ones have been strengthen. It is so good to see all the league members, without exception, coming onto the site not only to play golf but also to take part in the other events that the site has to offer as well as just hanging around to chat.

I would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the league, both directly and indirectly, as without you all this could not have happened.

Many Thanks.

Paul - Golf League Administrator A K A, Tigger.
