Fading With Audacity The steps below will guide you through the fading process in audacity. NOTE: Remember to re-export the file after you've finished setting the fades, as if you don't do this they won't be saved. Fading In: 1. Start the file playing with a press of the space bar. 2. Allow the file to play to the point at which you want the introductory fade in to end and the normal volume of the file to take over. 3. At this point, press the right square bracket key. 4. the file will continue to play, pressing the space bar will stop the file. 5. Now press the space bar to play the file and it should play up to the point at which you inserted the right marker with the right square bracket key only. 6. Now make sure you select this portion of the file with the keystroke "Shift+Home". 7. Depending on your screen reader and its configuration, you may or may not hear "selected" spoken. 8. Now press the keystroke "Alt+C" to open the "Effects" menu. 9. Now press a "U" to go to the "Utility Sub-Menu". 10. Open this menu with a push of the right arrow key. 11. Now Press an "F" and you should hear "fade in". 12. Press the "Enter" key and the program will process the fade in. 13. Once processed, pressing the space bar should play the file from its start position to the end of the fade in. 14. Press the "Home" key to reset the file to its start position. 15. Now press the space bar and the file will play through, with a fade in at the beginning. Fading Out: 1. Press the space bar to play the file and at the point at which you want to begin the fade out, press the left square bracket key. 2. The file will continue to play, pressing the space bar will stop it. 3. Pressing the space bar should now play the file from the marker point to its end. 4. Once you are sure you have marked the file in the correct place, do the keystroke "Shift+End" to select the file from the marker point to the end of the file. 5. Depending on your screen reader and its configuration, you may or may not hear "select" spoken. 6. Now press the keystroke "Alt+C" to open the "Effects" menu. 7. Now press a "U" to go to the "Utility Sub-Menu". 8. Open this sub-menu with a push of the right arrow key. 9. At this point, pressing an "F" will take you to the fade in control as previously. 10. Pressing the "F" a second time will take you to the fade out control. 11. You can also use the up and down arrow keys to navigate this menu. 12. Once on the fade out control, press the "Enter" key. 13. The program will now process the fade out. 14. Once processed, pressing the space bar at this point should allow you to hear from your marker to the end of the file with a fade out.
